What is Modified adjusted gross income?
Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is adjusted gross income plus specific excluded income amounts added back, used to determine eligibility for tax credits, deductions, and government programs. For Clean vehicle credits, MAGI includes foreign earned income exclusion, foreign housing deduction, and excluded income from Puerto Rico or American Samoa. MAGI calculations use the lower of the current year's or prior year's amounts, providing planning opportunities for taxpayers near income thresholds. Different programs have varying MAGI calculation methods and income limitations.
